Montréal takes the lead on the UIA’s list of the Americas’ top event cities
We’ve been here before, and it feels great to be back! For the second year in a row, Montréal takes first place on the Union of International Association’s (UIA) list of top host cities for international conventions in the Americas. Ahead of other major event destinations like Buenos Aires, Toronto, Washington and New York, Montréal played host to 108 international events – 29 more than the closest runner up Toronto – and a full 50% of all international events held in Canada in 2018.

There’s another number 1 we’re quite proud of, and that’s our ranking as the top city for international association meetings according to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), a title which we’ve held for three consecutive years and counting. And according to a recent survey by the Ipsos research firm, 95% of business tourists said they were satisfied with their experience in Montréal, and 98% were satisfied with our world-class meeting venues like our main convention centre the Palais des congrès de Montréal. Furthermore, 84% of these business travellers say they plan to return to Montréal as a tourist.
A closer look at the UIA
Founded in 1907 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Henri La Fontaine and information science pioneer Paul Otlet, the UIA keeps tabs on the activities and meetings of international associations, and facilitates and supports their work through worldwide initiatives and connection. A source of information, research and collaborative opportunities, the UIA plays an important role in the worldwide network of international associations.
