Montréal is always game to play. Over the past few decades, the city has hosted countless major athletic events, including the most famous sporting event in the world: the Summer Olympics. This year, many events happened for the first time since the pandemic. And they happened with massive success.
Here are five noteworthy sporting events that took place in Montréal this year!
2022 NHL Draft
The 2022 event marked the 27th time that Montréal hosted the NHL Draft (the most recent time before was 2009). The Draft was held over two days: July 7 and July 8. NHL club executives, scouts and coaches were present on the NHL Draft floor, while thousands of fans and hundreds of print, television, and radio media also attended. History was made, securing Montréal — once again — as one of the world’s great hockey cities.
Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal
The Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal is an event registered on the UCI World Tour calendar. With its ideal location on Mount Royal, the circuit guarantees an extremely high calibre competition. An intimidating course, consisting of a demanding climb that forces an exceedingly difficult cadence, repeated several times — that’s what the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal offers the planet’s cycling elite. The race happened once again in September!

In early September, Montréal hosted the annual 3x3 Basketball (pronounced three-ex-three) tournament as part of a larger urban cultural festival called DISTRIX. Debuting as an official medalist sport at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, 3x3 Basketball is a variation of basketball played three-a-side. The events took place in an open-air stadium in the heart of Montréal’s entertainment district: Quartier des Spectacles.
Marathon Beneva de Montréal
The 30th edition of Montréal’s annual marathon — officially known as Marathon Beneva de Montréal — took place from September 23 to 25. Across two days of races, some 15,000 racers participated in the 2022 edition. And with an additional 25,000 (or more) spectators and over 800 volunteers, the annual marathon has solidified itself as one of Montréal largest sporting events of the year.
