What's New in Montréal Tourisme Montréal: News and People Sporting event

Montréal is a city of sports, with a proud sporting history (including the beloved 1976 Olympics), a packed annual calendar of events both major and a little more left-field, and this year’s title on the mantelpiece as the Top Sports City for hosting events. And just added to that list is the announcement of Montréal as the host city for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, one of the most exciting events for emerging athletes.

Home to the Habs

Montréal’s love of hockey stretches from neighbourhood outdoor skating rinks to the NHL ice for our home team the Canadiens (or “Habs” to the locals) at the Bell Centre. With major players from the history of hockey like Patrick Roy, Guy Lafleur, and Maurice “Rocket” Richard and a record 24 Stanley Cup wins – 11 more than the second place Toronto Maple Leafs – the 2020 NHL Entry Draft will take place on hallowed ground. And we can’t think of anywhere more fitting than that.

It’s game on in Montréal

Since its hotel ballroom beginnings in Montréal in 1963, the NHL Entry Draft has grown into a major sporting event attracting world media attention and setting the course for our future hockey heroes. But Montréal is no stranger to attention either, given our ranking as a top events host city with stellar venues, unforgettable accommodations, a well-connected airport with over 150 direct routes around the globe and mouthwatering restaurants. And with an events scene that’s built on teamwork, Montréal is the perfect location for your next sporting event or meeting.
