Tourisme Montréal: News and People Trends and Technology What's New in Montréal

Home to buildings by some of the world’s most celebrated architects (including I.M. Pei, Mies van der Rohe, and local architectural star Moshe Safdie), Montréal has long been a hotbed of architectural experimentation and development.

The world has taken note.

In 2006, Montréal was named by UNESCO as an international City of Design. The city is a great place for architects from around the world to live and to work — and to meet for professional events.

The proof is in the numbers

Design Montréal’s Report on statistics and economic impacts of professional architectural practice in Montréal paints a picture of the city’s architectural sector that shows no signs of slowing down.

  • 1,470 architects work at architectural establishments in Montréal, be they private practice or freelance
  • 360 architects work in agencies, organizations or public companies in the Montréal region
  • 153 additional architects are employed by private employers whose primary sector is not architecture (the City of Montréal also employs 85 architects)
  • The architecture sector in Montréal generates revenues of more than $270 million — of which only a small part comes from public subsidies.

A hotbed of big investment

Montréal’s skyline and infrastructure are constantly growing and changing. The province of Québec is investing its money to continue that trend. Between now and 2031, the province has planned investments of $135 billion in public infrastructure, much of that being allocated to the city of Montréal. And that’s not to mention the countless private initiatives taking place on university campuses, corporate buildings, shared residential facilities and more.

A perfect place for your next architecture meeting

With an ever-growing list of inspiring venues available across the city (including some internationally-renowned favourites like the city’s conference centre, the Palais des congrès de Montréal), Montréal is the perfect host city for architecture meetings and conferences.
