Metropolis: decision makers from major international cities unite in Montréal
The Metropolis World Congress is a meeting of influential leaders from large urban centres from around the world. Among the 1000+ international delegates, over 100 municipal mayors — from cities such as Paris, Berlin, Mexico City and Johannesburg — are confirmed to attend the 2017 edition of the gathering in Montréal.
The event presents an opportunity to define a shared agenda among the largest global cities, and to find solutions to the most pressing issues of our time. Delegates will have the opportunity to develop better tools to exercise their roles as leaders in their respective cities.
THE THEME OF THE MEETING…
Cities — and especially big cities — are called to play an increasingly active role in addressing the current global challenges of our time: climate change, refugee emergencies, social inequalities, the implementation of new technologies, security in a time of radicalization and more. These problems are transcending borders and are common in many countries. The solutions are increasingly brought through local action, hence the theme of the congress: Global Challenges: Major Cities in Action.
The congress will be the opportunity for local actors from around the world — mayors, public influencers, experts, etc. — to exchange on the various new roles that cities can take on, while sharing ideas to tackle common challenges. Essentially, the expression “Think global, act local” is more apt than ever.
USE OF SPACE
During the congress, the Hub will offer activities that serve as a platform for exchange, networking and discovery. It will also serve as a conversational, experiential, and educational area for experts from the world’s largest cities.
Delegates can participate in a braindate, which is an intellectual matchmaking tool that helps connect people interested in sharing their own knowledge (through offers) or acquiring new skills (through requests). A perfect opportunity for learning and networking!
The Expo Zone will showcase and acknowledge good urban practices from across the globe. This meeting of minds is an opportunity for municipal representatives and NGOs to discover the offerings of a wide range of businesses. No less than 50 startups have been selected based on their innovation potential, and will be presenting their various initiatives.
MONTRÉAL AS A BACKDROP
Congress delegates have the occasion to discover Montréal at one of its most exciting moments. This XII Metropolis World Congress takes place in the heart of the city at the convention centre, with the celebrations for the 375th anniversary of Montréal happening daily.
