Big news! Montréal has been selected as the host city for the Lions Clubs International Convention to be held from June 24 to 28, 2022. More than 10,000 delegates will attend the event, which is one of the biggest of its kind worldwide.
We couldn’t be more excited to welcome them.
What is the Lions Club?
Great question. Lions Clubs International (LCI) is an international, non-political service organization established originally in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois. Around the world, it has over 48,000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries. In fact, it’s easier to list the countries where the Lions Club does not have members.
Notably, LCI is the largest service club organization in the world. They are value-driven, with hashtags such as #WeServe and #KindnessMatters used across their various social feeds. A perfect fit for Montréal.
Why did they choose Montréal?
This will not be LCI’s first meeting in Montréal. They’ve selected the city as their location for two other events: their 62nd annual meeting in 1979 and their 76th annual meeting in 1996. Incidentally, Montréal had won the event for 2020, then but then the pandemic put a damper on things. Their decision to return to Montréal — for their 104th gathering — is the result of significant collaboration behind the scenes by Tourisme Montréal and its partners.

What does it mean for Montréal in terms of attendance?
During a typical year, the LCI conservatively estimates that 15,000 to 18,000 delegates attend their annual gathering. They are, however, forecasting approximately 10,000 delegates for 2022 due to the realities of post-pandemic travel. But we might be in for a surprise — the 2020 convention was cancelled, and the 2021 edition is 100% virtual. The Lions members love to meet, so they might arrive in droves. Or prides. You get the idea.
The event will be headquartered at the Le Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel. But given the sheer volume of attendees, hotels across the city will likely be at full capacity. Some meeting will be at the Palais des congrès de Montréal and some will be held at the International Convention at the Bell Centre. With more than 30,000 room nights expected for the city’s hotels, the event is expected to generate $16 million in tourism spending to Montréal’s economy!
A note from the CEO of Tourisme Montréal
“We are very proud to announce the return of the 2022 Lions Clubs International Annual Convention to Montréal after having to cancel this year’s event due to the pandemic. The arrival of this event reaffirms Montréal as the capital of international events in the Americas thanks to the warm, friendly, and safe welcome the city offers. The convention will have a definite social impact, reflecting the values of volunteer involvement and mutual aid conveyed by Lions Clubs International, which are sure to resonate powerfully with Montrealers.”
