Green meetings Tourisme Montréal: News and People What's New in Montréal Working Smarter

A feather in the cap of Montréal’s urbanity is the BIXI bike-sharing system, one of locals’ favourite methods of getting around. Named after a blend of “bike” and “taxi”, BIXI stations dot all over Montréal with thousands of bikes at the ready – an open system perfect for attendees and business visitors looking for an unforgettable way to get between events or spend some healthy downtime. And numbers don’t lie: annually in recent years, nearly 5-million rides have been taken on the BIXI system.

It’s simple. Open to anyone with a credit card, BIXI passes are available for several time periods ranging from as little as a one-way trip to a full season from April through to November. Bikes can be booked directly at the station or via the BIXI app (for Android and iPhone) and the first 30 (for rides purchased at the station) or 45 minutes (for longer period subscribers) are included with a low fee for additional time. BIXI’s informative website and How it Works section has got it all covered.

Well-marked bike lanes traverse all over Montréal, and the popular historic (not to mention beautiful) Lachine Canal is a less than 15-minute ride from the Palais des congrès, our main conference centre right in the heart of downtown.

BIXI goes electric!

In summer 2019, the Electric BIXI was added to bike racks around the city, offering electric assist to riders with speeds of up to 32 km/h. Electric BIXIs can be spotted on the app with a small lightning bolt and cost a small extra fee of $1.00 per sign-out. It’s also necessary to wear a helmet and follow the Highway Safety Code while riding, but it’s a zip of a ride!

Keeping guests active increases productivity and group excursions can offer intriguing networking opportunities on two wheels. Providing a fun and fit way to explore Montréal, informing your attendees about BIXI will add to their experience of both your event and the city.
